Who knew Andrew Lloyd Webber was so funny?

Okay people. We knew this would be a weird week. But I have to give these contestants credit -- even though most picked very well known songs, they weren't all completely out of their elements. I personally would have found some of the more obscure cooler songs ALW wrote, but maybe they weren't allowed too? I think this week solidified the front runners from those who were getting away with being cool over being singers. There were clearly 3 winners and 2 losers and 1 person who did well but I simply cannot go there for.

Let me begin by saying that I loved Sir ALW's speech to the contestants -- I am here for you - to help you get better and do your best. Loved that - I am going to interject my favorite ALW line before each contestant. Here we go...

ALW: I WANT TO SEE THE UNANIMATED VERSION
Syesha -- "One Rock and Roll too Many" Anyone notice that she got the dreaded number 1 spot? The one that usually leads to being kicked off? Are the producers hoping to get rid of her? Not sure what show this is from. It was a good choice for her and she definitely finally had a personality. Sang well but I felt totally uncomfortable with Simon telling her she looked sexy. She can go replace Fantasia in Color Purple since she likes to copy her anyway. I can't say she was bad. She was good but I can't vote for her. OK DOG

ALW: I NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER SEE A MAN SINGING MEMORY WITH DREADLOCKS
Jason Castro -- "Memory" I DIDN'T KNOW A CAT WAS SINGING IT? Where has this kid lived? What planet is he from? He should have let a cat sing it because a cat would have been better. Look, if he could have just been able to sing it, it might have been fun - could have hinted at his Hallelujah performance, but he can't sing it. And this is a singing competition. Why did Paula need to point out that he is not a female power balladeer? Really, Paula? I was so sure he was a power balladeer because of all the times that I have had to turn up the volume on my TV to hear him sing. She needs to be edited. Anyway, most likely this week Jason would be voted off, but lucky for him, someone may have done worse. BUH BYE

Which leads me to...

ALW: I DON'T THINK THAT GIRL HAD A CLUE ABOUT WHAT SHE WAS SINGING ABOUT
Brooke White -- "You Must Love Me" One of the most obvious choices in terms of finding an easy song. ALW wrote this song for Madonna to sing in the movie version of Evita so she could have a shot at the Oscar for original song. Let's address the do-over. I totally agree with Simon that it was absolutely okay for Brooke to start over rather than mess up. As someone who always thinks she is going to forget the words, I get it. So that is not hte issue. What is the issue is that Brooke cannot sing well. This song which was actually in an easy range (has to be for Madonna), proved too difficult for her and so she just cannot win a singing competition. She was very lucky that Simon was so classy in his remarks. He could have been very, very mean for that one. And let me be clear that even with the explanation, Brooke did not understand the song. It is not "You Must Love ME" It is "You Must LOVE me." ALW even said that! BUH BYE

ALW: HE JUST MUST KEEP HIS EYES OPEN - I CAN'T WATCH SOMEBODY WHO'S GOT HIS EYES CLOSED ALL THE TIME
David Archuleta -- "Think of Me" Why did Ryan make him endure little girls running on stage and hugging him? I would have freaked out. So little gaspuleta "soulified" the song. I was undecided on whether this version was cheesy or something special. Unfortunately i just kept watching to see if closed his eyes. But he sang well. Did he forget the words in the middle? Although he sang well, there is no way that he is the one to beat. Randy is crazy. Yes David proves the point that if you can sing you can sing anything -- but does that make him relevant? Or worthy of me purchasing his CD? I agree with Simon - pleasant but not enough. I'm torn, but he should be back. VOTE

ALW: THAT'S NOT THE SONG FOR A GIRL WITH A GREAT BIG CHEST VOICE
Carly Smithson -- "Jesus Christ Superstar" What a perfect choice. She showed personality, she looked great and she enjoyed what she was doing. I don't know if any of you know the song, but the chorus is not usually sung in the repeating way she did it. I loved the riff she did. She sang it and made it modern and (well can you tell I loved it?) I was really surprised Randy didn't like it. There is obviously some conspiracy against her. Thank god Simon finally liked it. The t-shirt was cute. I sensed genuine excitement which was cool. VOTE

ALW: I'M A GORGEOUS 17 YEAR OLD GIRL
David Cook -- "Music of the Night" Part of me hated it. Why did he have a British accent? But part of me thought it was smart for him not to change it up this time. He got to show that he can really, really sing which sometimes gets lost in all of the re-done versions of songs David does so well with. I love musical theater so I love that even the rocker, loves it (unlike Jason who has lived in a box and hasn't heard of Cats). However the accent made it feel old and like he was just singing along to the soundtrack. But when he hit that high note - PERFECTLY! then I was okay with this choice. He is safe - he is the favorite, why not indulge and maybe get some of the grandparents / parents who may not understand him on his side? And sing that musical theater song to show his range? VOTE

Note to David -- ALW is a Sir, not a Lord.

NOTE to Ryan -- don't sing, ever. And what is Andrew Lloyd Webber going to perform tomorrow? How many of you think ALW was pretty cool?

For me, Carly was the clear winner with David Cook and David Archuleta next. Syesha was alright and Jason was pretty bad, but Brookey (as Bob says) is buh bye. I can't believe we are down to 5! Just remember...

don't be ashamed of your obsessions...

Thanks for the updates. Tonight I was actually home to catch this and it was a bunch of terrible song choices and okay execution. Thank god for ALW getting Carly sing something from JC Superstar--one of his more fun and certainly more rockin' shows and she ripped it!

Really liked Carly and Cook this week.
N.B. The Color Purple closed on Broadway at the end of Feb, so Syesha is S.O.L. :)
ALW is actually a Lord as well as a Knight. Even Ryan introduced him as "Lord" so David wasn't incorrect. http://biographies.parliament.uk/parliament/default.asp?id=26996

to Rob -- totally agree that Carly's song choice was the best one.

to Linda -- thank you for confirming that ALW is a LORD. And a SIR. And that Color Purple is closed -- poor Syesha, not job waiting for her...
