Okay, I know I was a little behind -- about 1 week I believe. But the moment I started playing Jersey Shore's debut episode, I knew my life would never be the same.
First things first. I grew up in Jersey, but not at the Shore. I am from respectable Central Jersey and although I went to the Shore, I did not act or speak like these freaks. I do admit, however, that "look at that guy's tatt" and "wanna get a slice?" and "let's go to Bar A (A for Anticipation in case you have never been there)" have all been phrases I have uttered.
"I mean this SITUATION is gonna be indescribable. You can't even describe the SITUATION that you're about to get into the SITUATION." Yes, these were the words uttered by Mike who calls himself "The Situation" because of his abs.
Then there is the extremely short girl Nicole aka Snooki who wears her hair like two Princess Leia buns on the top of her head. Snooki passed out on night one and thinks the whole house is against her. They can't remember her nickname is Snooki, so they call her Snickers, Snicki, oh my god. These people can't even get a nickname right! She keeps calling her parents on the phone that quacks like a duck when it rings. She wants to go home where she is the Princess of Poughkeepsie -- who would say that about themselves?
Angelina aka "Jolie" does not like their job working in a t-shirt shop on the Boardwalk. "I feel this job is beneath me. I am a bartender, I do, like, you know, great things." Working 8 or 9 hours a day is too much for her. But she has no problem calling her boyfriend 5 times after he hangs up on her and it goes to voicemail.
Pauly D is happy that 4 foot tall Snooki is staying "She is definitely my girl. In a weird Snookers world, like, me and Snookers, would make the best, like, little Guidos and Guidettes." I can't take it anymore.
Let's talk about the SITUATION again -- "I just have unbelievable mass appeal. Everybody loves me, babies, dogs, hot girls, cougars. "
Jenni, JWOWW, has some fashion problems. There are children who read this blog so I will not get into the details, but she is now the Queen of inappropriate tops in my humble opinion. And then her and Pauly D? Yucky. But she likes to eat ham and drink water.
And then Vinny got pink eye. I thought Ronnie was normal, but then he made "Ron Ron" a pink drink. Yeah, no way.
I really am watching other things, so here is a little about other TV.
It is good that V is over until March, because I was about to drop it anyway. Brothers and Sisters on the other hand - is ridiculous heart wrenching. The whole Kitty cancer story is out of control. I'm not a big fan of Justin and Rebecca, but their pre-wedding jitters brought a tear to my eye.
And then there is Glee. Sue Sylvester is beyond words. And the last episode where Mr Shuster finally found out that his wife was faking her pregnancy was so good. But what really rocks my world is the soundtrack. Best morning music EVER. Start with some Journey, into REO Speedwagon, hit some Rihanna, Heart, Kanye's Golddigger, I am in heaven. It also got me back into singing, because in my wildest dreams I can sing like Lea Michele. Dream on!
I'm going to attack movies finally - I've been lazy. Saw Blindside over the Thanksgiving weekend and really liked it -- not very realistic (although from a true story), but a well made, good feeling movie. Sandra Bullock is so watchable and Tim McGraw did a great job - props to my country man.
Also saw Up In the Air -- everybody RUN and see this movie. It is funny and warm and harsh and real and just everything. George Clooney plays a guy who has separated himself from real life by fully engaging in the life of a frequent flyer who flies all over the country to fire people from their jobs. He is completely cold yet unbelievably charming at the same time. And when a new co-worker and a new frequent flyer pal enter his world, he learns his life lessons. This is a movie I want the screenplay to -- I want to re-read every line. It will be seen again.
Well that's all for tonight -- more soon my friends.
In the words of Mike, "Everybody at the shore definitely knows the situation. As far as I know everybody loves the situation. And if you don't love the situation, I'm gonna make you love the situation."
Hey Mike, here's the situation, don't be ashamed of your obsessions because that would be a situation.

CMA's - country and my biggest night
Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosting the show -- So smart to use song to make their comic quips -- Swine Flu to the classic Blue, D-I-V-O-R-C-E taunting the break-up of country duo Brooks and Dunn, really fun. I am still amazed by how much Carrie has grown in her personality. She is relaxed, funny, and not to mention gorgeous. Also, can we note how much Brad loves Keith Urban - they are buds, they would probably want to hang out with me. Can't you see it? The three of us, chillin', playing video games...
Let's talk about Taylor's opening number. Not okay. Not okay. This is a girl that I love listening to...ON CD. Live is a whole other story -- and the gyrations and head shaking and pelvis thrusting. It is so annoying. I actually really like a lot of her music, it's fun and light and easy. But then she performs live on these shows and I am waiting to press fast forward. Crazy! But her Kanye incident provided the best entertainment of the evening.
Lady Antebellum rocks and I was PSYCHED that they beat Rascal Flatts for Group of the Year. For all those that don't know, Rascal Flatts basically puts out a new album every year and wins every award imaginable. So this was major for Lady A to win with their first album. Didn't agree with them winning Single of the Year -- Jamey Johnson's In Color is really fantastic, but then he won for Song of the Year so that's cool.
Miranda kicked it as always -- let me tell everyone that her new album is phenomenal, phenomenal, phenomenal. It rocks, it tugs at your heartstrings, it is funny. Pure country. But can we talk about Carrie's performance? I like men, but I could not take my eyes off of her. She is such a performer now. And with dancing or moving around, here is a phenomenal point -- she can sing at the same time. And I mean really SING.
So happy for Darius Rucker -- he has always been a great singer and musician and his crossover to country was genuine and refreshing. Great stuff.
Let's talk about Tim McGraw. I have heard bad stories about he and Faith that I won't post on this blog, but I always loved his look. And Keith and Nicole have clearly taken over as First Couple of Nashville. But this song is fantastic. Just fantastic. I can't download it because you have to buy the whole album and I don't want to. But I will do find a way.
Wow having this show air on Veteran's Day is overkill. Most of you haven't been to a Country Music Festival but there are about 75 million shout outs to the troops. I'm all for the support, but it gets to be a bit much. Is that wrong to say? I don't mean it in a bad way.
Daughtry with Vince Gill -- wow. I have loved this song, not only because of the lyrics and Daughtry's voice, but the combination with the sweet sound of Vince Gill. It is gorgeous.
Keith. Oh Keith. You are so hot and awesome and hot and awesome. I love you, really I do.
And now to my favorite moment of any Country night. Sugarland. Jennifer looks amazing of course (I try to help her by helping her stylist). And then that voice. Chills and tears. There is no one like her, no one. Phenomenal.
Really Taylor won Album of the Year? Ummm, that is a tough one for me. Love on the Inside (Sugarland) is phenomenal. No question. Defying Gravity (Keith Urban) is fantastic as is American Saturday Night (Brad Paisley) but Sugarland had the best written, produced album and they should have won. Although, whoever made Taylor sound that good on the album compared to how she sounds live, well maybe that person should have won.
Jamey Johnson and Kid Rock. Jamey is seriously cool and talented. And then add in Kid Rock, one of my new loves, and it is beyond cool.
Sugarland wins Duo and tries to give tribute to Brooks and Dunn, but they are exactly that, DONE.
Taylor gets to perform again. And she redeemed herself. Fifteen -- acoustically and she sang. Not perfect, but much better.
Jason Aldean -- love that someone can sing a song about a Big Green Tractor and it gets me to sing along. So hilarious. Country Music Hall of Fame celebration for Barbara Mandrell -- so much cooler to have Martina sing than Barbara.
Okay, so Carrie can wear ANYTHING. SIlver, Green, Red, Golden Yellow. And hot pants. It is insane.
Billy Currington was awesome. Funnest song of my summer.
Taylor won female vocalist of the year. Let me repeat that - Taylor won female VOCALIST of the year -- I think that is for the best VOCALS. SINGING VOCALS.
And Kenny gets to close it with a song with Dave Matthews. That is kind of funny because he tours non-stop just like Dave. And they have the same weird fans who would go to every show over and over. Funny and annoying.
Taylor wins Entertainer of the Year at age 19. She is a sweet girl. And I was touched by her parents joy. Wow. Well here is some good news. She does not have a new album so it won't be all about Taylor next year. There I said it.
Alright folks. Time to go to bed. Remember...
don't be ashamed of your obsessions...or of not really liking Taylor Swift live but still listening and singing along to her album.
Brad Paisley wins Male Vocalist -- that works. I do want Keith to have his moment again.

V and Mad Men's season almost closes
I loved V in its first incarnation -- Diana, Robin who had the alien baby, the actor Marc Singer. Unbelievable that it was 25 years ago (geez, I am old!!). Tonight marked the Series premiere of V (circa 2009). The beginning is simple, NYC and several other cities around the world are shocked by the arrival or massive spacecraft lurking in the skies above them. The Visitors on board the space ship immediately send a global message of peace -- premise is simple. We are another intelligent life form who simply need a mineral from earth, and in return we will leave your world a better place. We come in peace.
Key characters missions are explained right off the bat. Juliet from Lost (sorry, I don't know her name yet) is a single mother FBI agent whose divorce looms large and whose teenage son is immediately enamored by the V's and their message. Scott Wolf is an anchor searching for his big story to lift him from just reading the news to creating it and is immediately tagged by Anna, the V leader (they changed Diana to Anna!) as the one she wants to tell her story and more. The priest whose church is ready to support the V's because their presence has driven followers back to the church who is skeptical of the true mission of the V's. Brian who is about to propose to his fiance but then reveals he is one of the Visitors but is opposed to their mission. The rebel leader who sounds like a crazy man with all of his theories but slowly builds the Resistance as his theories prove true.
Immediately there are those who believe their message and those who question it -- sides are taken right away by some. Such a clear plot, such clearly made characters, everything we remember is out on the table. And now we are drawn it to watch the battle between the Visitors and the Resistance begin. Plus love the elements of modernity -- the Visitors were working undercover as "terrorists," the Visitors promise universal healthcare in their messaging. The Visitor's message is spread online through the youth culture. The story still works today. Good start and I am in.
Can we please talk about Mad Men? Best season ever. Finally tons of the personal intrigue that I love. Don's secrets all come tumbling out right in Betty's lap and she listens and hears him, but underneath it all, his secrets, instead of bringing them closer, give her the justification to finally admit she doesn't love him. They don't fight, she barely cries, the cold wall between them is finally out in the open and understood by them both -- they finally have a reason for the wall. Don and Betty have really been on the forefront of the season and I do miss some of the office intrigue, and I really miss Peggy, but it is so satisfying to watch Don and Betty go through this season. Oh and January Jones is just stunning -- every outfit she puts on takes my breath away -- can we talk about her look in Rome? It really is beyond. And the JFK assassination episode -- with Roger's daughter's wedding and Pete's revelation. So smart and intriguing. Can't wait for Sunday.
Of course my TV watching over the past few weeks has been overwhelmed by baseball. What great games! Yes I love the Yankees, but I really think their games in the Division Championships, the League Championships and now the World Series have been so exciting -- real, live plotlines, characters to root for, cliffhangers (and Cliff Lee!) -- and as the Yankees head to the grand finale (yes they will win), I thank them for giving me the best TV so far this season!
Bloomberg is giving his acceptance speech in Spanish and it is hilarious!!

A new season begins
I know, I know, it has been way too long. Even a pop culture freak needs to take a break sometime my friends. I am now overloaded with thoughts to share with you, but I will organize my thoughts by category so I don't overwhelm you.
This edition will feature one of my favorite topics -- television. It was a slow summer for TV -- I will never understand why Summer TV has to be flooded with bad reality shows and dance competitions and talent competitions and now come Fall I am forced to try to DVR 3 shows at the same because all the good shows have returned.
What did I watch this summer? Big Brother, of course. It is the stupidest premise ever -- a group of people live in a house with no contact with the outside world and compete in silly competitions and vote each other out. There is no reason why I should want to spend three hours of my week watching this except that it is the funniest show ever. These people are losers and watching them yell at each other about loyalty and honor while gossiping behind each others backs was the best. I know most of you don't watch, but there was one contestant named Jessie (a boy) who is a bodybuilder / wrestler from the Midwest and he would flex his muscles at everyone and at himself in the mirror all day long. It was priceless.
I also spent my summer watching three seasons of How I Met Your Mother on DVD. This show is genius and I am so excited to watch Neil Patrick Harris host the Emmy's tonight. It is about a group of late 20's, now early 30's friends who live in NYC and the trials and tribulations of their dating lives and friendships. Each character has its quirks and the combination of the four is simply genius. And Neil Patrick Harris is legen- wait for it - dary (his character's favorite phrase). I really did not watc hthis show before because I assumed it was a typical CBS sitcom, but this is so cool and fun, not lame at all.
Of course there was a lot of MJ coverage filling my time earlier in the summer, but just recently there was finally the perfect tribute to Michael Jackson -- fittingly, the opening of the MTV VMA Awards. I have abandoned watching most of this show because it is usually overrun with gangster rap and rock bands I haven't heard of, but this year, the pop culture vibe suited my style. (Let's not mention the fact that the concept of a show honoring the year's best videos on a channel that doesn't even play videos is pretty ludicrous). Of course we all talked about Kanye's retarded interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech -- seriously this guy's head is going to explode very, very, very, soon. But it was Madonna's opening speech in tribute to MJ that captured my attention. This was the best speech I have heard about Michael -- it was personal (calling out that both Madonna and Michael were born the same month of the same year and that she lost her Mother at a young age while he lost his childhood), honest (he was human while a King of Pop) and moving. And then the army of MJ dancers performing his greatest moves ending with Janet dancing her tribute to Michael alongside him on the screen. It was amazing. And I am now satisfied to end the summer of Michael Jackson.
I know you all want to know what I am going to watch this Fall, so let me give you Rachna's guide to all things television...I can't believe I have figured this out in a schedule format, thanks to EW for helping me and my OCD.
Let me start by telling you one show I will not be watching 5 times a week. Jay Leno. I can't believe we are losing serial dramas so NBC can put Jay Leno in Primetime. I preferred Letterman before, and Jay ruining the primetime schedule only makes me like him less.
SUNDAY -- Mad Men and Brothers and Sisters plus Curb Your Enthusiasm (will have to watch ON Demand). Mad Men is really on target this season -- I thought last season was amazing but a little cold and sterile while this season has more of an emotional pull. And I love that as much as I want the characters to redeem themselves, Don from his philandering, Betty from her coldness, Peggy from abandoning motherhood, the show just refuses to give in to my sentimental pleading (because the show is not supposed to be sentimental!)
MONDAY -- How I Met Your Mother (I'm not caught up, but will save it until I catch up...), Gossip Girl. Heroes if officially off the radar people, let it go.
TUESDAY -- Will be my catch up day, because there is nothing to watch...
WEDNESDAY -- This is a tough night. For comedy, The New Adventures of Old Christine, plus can't wait for Modern Family with Ed Harris from Married with Children (it looks amazing) And of course Glee!! I also want to try Mercy the nurse drama which will hopefully replace my ER fix. And for now, Top Chef which is one of the best season's ever (love the battling brothers).
THURSDAY -- Don't even think about asking me to go out on Thursdays. I'm booked. Need to try Flash Forward for my Lost fix until Lost returns for its final season. Plus Survivor which is already outstanding with crazy Russell who spilled out everyone's water on the first episode. Plus Grey's which redeemed itself by the end of last season. Oh and then of course the NBC comedy block of Parks and Recreation, Office and Community / 30 Rock. Oh and did I tell you that I love the Mentalist? I guess the hot Simon Baker has something to do with it, but it is a problem because there is no way I can watch over 5 hours of TV plus Project Runway in one night. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY - I need to stay away from the television except for SNL of course. I am dumbfounded that Lorne Michaels fired Michaela Watkins (she did Hoda in the Today Show sketch and the Bitch pleeaze blogger bit on Weekend Update). I was excited that she was there to carry the burden from Kristen Wiig who was in every single skit. Why get rid of her? I don't get it...
I am a little upset right now because I can't figure out when V is airing, but it will be on my schedule. I lived for V as a kid. I even played it with my friends at recess (no I don't know remember the game, we certianly did not rip our skins off). Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost stars with Scott Wolf from Party of Five. Enough reason for me. Help me find it!!
Okay folks, this was blog overload. Time to watch the Emmy's even though most of my favorites are not nominated, but Neil Patrick Harris is hosting which means it is guaranteed funny.
In case you forgot my mantra...it is especially true considering everything I admitted to you above.
Don't be ashamed of your obsessions...
they are too much fun.

The Death of a Pop Icon
I thought it appropriate to write tonight as I watch the coverage on the death of Michael Jackson. For someone obsessed with pop culture, this is a monumental moment. However, as a child born in 1975, it is also a personal moment.
My first album was Thriller. My second was We are The World. I wasn't a crazy fan, I thought his dancing was a little weird, but his songs surrounded my childhood and youth. Later in life I wanted to not like his music, to shun this strange personality that I couldn't understand, yet I still know all of the words.
Here are some of my thoughts, randomly assembled:
--I am watching MTV because I wanted to see what they would do. That network was built on Michael Jackson -- if he hadn't contributed what he did to the art of music videos, the network, in my opinion, wouldn't exist. Very happy to see Kurt Loder on air talking about his legacy. Watching a 2001 performance of Michael with Justin TImberlake (with NSync). All of the artists who were influenced by his music, his dancing, his videos, his style. It is really amazing.
--On that note, the art of music videos is really gone, isn't it?
--I remember listening to Thriller on the radio and I was so scared of Vincent Price's voice that I would have to turn it off when he did that laugh at the end (hey I was 9?)
--Memories of dancing at a party / wedding with my cousin Meera and for the first time discovering that the Electric Slide could be performed to Don't Stop til You Get Enough. There was nothing like it.
--I didn't wear a glove or a Thriller style military jacket, but how weird that there are tons of celebrities today wearing Balmain's MJ inspired jacket. Literally right now.
--Recently realized that Man in the Mirror is my favorite MJ karaoke song -- as I led a group of friends to close the night of karaoke with it.
--I did the head turning moves to Black or White - I loved that video (not just because there was an Indian girl in it)
--I really did not like the song The Girl is Mine that he did on Thriller with Paul McCartney - oh it bugged me! What happens to the rights of the Beatles music that he purchased?
--Looking back, obviously Thriller was groundbreaking, but I think Bad was my favorite album. Bad, The Way You Make me Feel, Man In The Mirror, Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal, Leave Me Alone - amazing songs.
--I wonder what Weird Al is thinking today? His career was practically based on Michael's
--Watching his 1995 MTV Music Awards performance of Bad - Smooth Criminal to Dangerous, Black suit with white shirt and black skinny tie. Awesome.
--I do not want to hear every stupid celeb's reaction to this -- unless you knew him, keep it shut Speidi. Okay, I didn't know him either, but I am not a celebrity and I am not twittering about it.
--Elizabeth Taylor must be very upset.
--Someone needs to organize a tribute concert -- it would be MAJOR.
--Who will raise his children? Will we ever hear from them or learn the truth about their childhoods?
--Wow, the Scream video with him and Janet.
--Please note that I am not commenting on his personal life -- my thoughts on that are far from this complimentary -- just sharing my memories of his music. This is also why I have chosen MTV to look back on him.
--Who doesn't remember when his hair lit on fire during the making of the Pepsi commercial?
--Is Webster still alive?
--I sign off now as MTV does. The Summer of 2009 will be the Summer Michael Jackson died. Pop culture media will be taken over by his life and death. It is sad and his life was so tragic, but at least Jon and Kate, Speidi and their spawn, all of these d-listers who became famous without talent will be pushed to the side as the King of Pop is remembered. I'm okay with that - he was a talent.

I TOLD YOU SO
I don't even know where to start except at the beginning. "This is the finale of ...American Idol." I loved the judges recap at the start -- Randy with "For me for you" Kara with "Sweetie" (love that she cheered for herself AGAIN) Paula's earpiece with all of her big words this season and Simon's inability to hear. It was genius. And let's not forget Paula's dress - what was that? Kara looked good and as we saw later, she looks even better without clothes on...
Adam and Kris come out in all white. Kris wore a white shirt and pants, and Adam wore a white jacket with animal patches on his jeans tucked into his metallic boots. Is wearing all white that hard to do and not look retarded? I have a lot to say about Adam's outfits -- it goes even wilder later.
The Top 13 come out to sing So What by Pink - the producers love the all white combo. Scott was seriously rocking out and I am impressed with his ability to learn choreography - he is BLIND! Wow, Jasmine, Scott, Jorge, Alexis, Michael Sarver - so forgettable. I did like seeing Anoop and Megan again. But looking back on last season, you just can't compare -- Cook, Michael Johns, Carly, Brooke, Jason and Archuleta - that was the best top group of all time.
David Cook sings his song Permanent written for his brother. He looks great and has lost some of his paunch. Such a sad song and he sang his face off as he always does. The tears in his eyes brought tears to mine. What a star. Nice of Idol to let the song benefit his cause. It just hit me that it was two guys last year and two guys again this year. In fact, except for Fantasia and Diana, it has never been two girls.
**Golden Idol funny interlude. A fun way to pay tribute to some of the crazy audition round moments. I think Norman is hysterical.
Lil Rounds sings with Queen Latifah and I realize that they are pretty much going to let the celeb guest artists show off a new song. That is okay for some, but who cares about this song? And let's talk about Queen Latifah's outfit -- I am really proud of her for losing so much weight, but no it is not time to jump into a skintight, one-shouldered bodysuit number. No, babe, you need to wait about another 50 pounds for that. Yikes.
So psyched when Anoop and Alexis start singing Jason Mraz. I love this song. And then he came out -- I would have liked to hear him with Kris (but I didn't know what was to come for Kris). Anoop was a nice shining moment for me this season. Talk about breaking some boundaries. He put some cool back to my peeps after the Sanjaya debacle.
The journey of Kris Allen -- let's remember that he was not shown before the Top 36 round. And then he came out with Man in the Mirror. The dark horse, the artist, the creative soul, the humble man. Oh and in case you didn't know, he is married -- but they do not talk about his wife or let her speak at all. It is a little absurd - I do want to hear about their love and relationship. But I don't have time to think about that because KRIS IS SINGING WITH KEITH. Keith texted me this morning to tell me would be on Idol (I am in the fan club and sometimes Keith texts me or calls me). The best duet of the night. Keith looks awesome with his shorter hair and their voices worked so well together. I love this new song of Keith's. Now I wish I had been there!!!!!!!!!! But I would have lost it.
Then the girls come out with Fergie. Megan looked amazing but even her great legs could not compare with Fergie's -- from meth addict to superstar. Fergie is amazing. Loved the Black Eyed Peas performance. It was great.
The technical problem during their song once again shows the formula of Idol -- despite being the biggest show on television, they keep the production values low -- I'm more and more sure that it is part of their formula -- it is an amateur talent show and they keep the slick away for the most part to retain part of that original street cred.
***More Golden Idols. Yuck I hate the bikini girl. Ummm, she definitely added something o her look -- did you see Randy's face? Love that Ryan called her out "I was going to ask you what's new, but I think I know." GENIUS. Here was the best moment of pure live television of the season. She thought she was going to be allowed to sing again and show off her new assets. And then Kara came out!! And she was surprised. I do not think she knew. David Cook was on his feet. Bikini Girl still tried to sing, but Kara blew her away. Even Simon stood up. And then -- Kara ripped open her dress to reveal the best bikini bod! Love that they made it about being for a charity. Genius moment just genius. Live television can be so great.
Cyndi Lauper with Allison Iraheta -- beautiful. Did you see Cyndi on 30 Rock? All these celebs came on to sing a charity spoof song to get Alec Baldwin's long lost Dad a new Kidney - so funny, find it on youtube.
Danny Gokey comes out to sing Hello by Lionel and he did a great job, but it is hard to not think of Cook's version. I knew Lionel was coming out next. Still like Danny's voice, but he could not have won this. He needs to find his niche. Here is an example where the star coming out to do a new song didn't work that well. I was just waiting (as was daughter Nicole in the audience) for a classic -- and then he sang All Night Long. That was fun.
Oh no he didn't -- Adam did not put on wings with his leather jacket and PLATFORM boots. No, he didn't. I didn't recognize the song and thought maybe Elton was coming out, but then Kiss came out. And Kris and his sparkle lashes and lit wings and platform boots sang with Gene Simmons et al. I couldn't look at it. I do appreciate that Adam has always stayed true to Adam - no apologies, but still let's talk about the wings one more time. I told you he is ready to put on a harness and fly out over the audience. Split screen with Adam and Gene. Classic but wrong.
Santana out on the stage. Matt gets to have a moment in yet another hat. But Kris rocked the most on the Rob Thomas written song Smooth (Rob Thomas is a genius songwriter). Fun jam song. Danny did a pelvic thrust But Jorge really took pelvic dance moves to another level.
Cook gives Adam and Kris their new cars in the cheesiest spot of the night.
Another great moment as Megan and Michael Sarver sing with Steve Martin. Perfect song choice. How clever is Steve Martin? He wrote this song and a whole collection of banjo songs. Michael Sarver is a good singer. Megan is pretty and I like her style.
All the guys with Rod Stewart -- wow. Kris is the only sexy guy (Anoop is pretty cute though). I liked the black suits and of course Adam hits the high note at the end. Rod is starting to show his age -- he is all torso and no legs.
***Last Golden Idol goes to Tatiana -- it was staged but it was perfect that she sang the same song again! She almost made me stop watching the show - thank god she didn't make it to the tour. Did you see Ruben's face?
Let's talk about who is in the audience -- Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Michael Johns, Janice Dickinson, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden and Justin Guarini. You know how I know Justin was there? Because they showed him approximately 55 times. Ridiculous.
Kris and Adam in all black come out to sing Queen -- I thought this was ridiculously lopsided towards Adam, but Kris killed it on the verses. And then the Queen band was there! Ummm Adam trying to shoulder bump. Wow just saw Randy's bow tie again. Adam should become the new lead singer of Queen.
Commercial break and Fox News shows a picture from the Gucci event with Madonna and Mark is in the picture with her -- I was sitting right next to him and he was on the news! Great moment.
And now the moment of the truth. I was prepared for anything. My gut told me that Kris was going to pull this off as you all know because I said it A LOT. But Adam had a great season and tons of support from the producers and the media. So I would have understood if he had won. Ryan goes to the judges and Simon says "I thought you were both brilliant, unusually incredibly nice people and I think that both of you should be very proud of what you achieved last night and the future's all yours." In other words, I do not know what is going to happen and so I will act like either should win.
100 million vote cast (200 from Ed, Mark and myself all for Kris). I thought Kris assumed it was Adam. But OH YES -- Kris Allen is the next American Idol. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO. WOW, WOW, WOW. Amazing victory. Let me add this -- I think Adam is a great singer and has the ability to become a star but he was touted by the producers and media too hard and Kris just kept upping his game with original, creative, marketable hits. I hope Kris won because of that and not because America was afraid of Adam's sexuality. If that is what happened or if that is what the media turns this into, I will be PISSED. That is my thought on that topic.
Back to the victory which was ruined with the awarding of the new American Idol trophy by a girl in a bad dress. What add a new element in? Kris sings the No Boundaries song. Let me say this -- I know it is cheesy, but I am falling for it when Kris sings it. Once again, I want to be clear -- the producer's know the finale song is cheesy -- they want an inspirational ballad about rising above and fulfilling dreams. They know it is not the best song in the world but this is the type of song that they choose to end the journey with. It is part of the amateur finding a dream path with confetti sprinkled in. Kris did much better with it tonight. Finally a shot with him an his wife and he breaks down in tears.
Another season over, another year gone by. Another Idol victory. I hope you have enjoyed our journey together and shared in my obsession. Remember - the blog is not over! It will come down to once a week, but I still have plenty to say!
Thanks for sharing with me - I look forward to your comments. And remember,
don't be ashamed of your obsessions...even if you are obsessed with Adam. Go Kris!

A duel to remember
I watched the whole show and then went back to write so I could absorb. And I have to tell you, for a season that did not knock me off my seat, it was a finale of great standards. Maybe because I wasn't so stuck one way or another? (Okay, I was stuck on one side agianst Adam)Because I was ready to blown away? Because it was an open stage? Because the judges finally did not call out Adam as the second coming? Here are my thoughts -- and you know I have a lot of them.
I wonder if Kara is excited for her first finale? I love Simon dressed up - love him.
So Kris wins the coin toss and Adam goes first.
First song is contestant's choice. Back story video shows that Adam made a lot of noise as a baby - big surprise. Adam picks "Mad World." I'm glad he picked that because it was one of the few performances of his I really enjoyed. But then he has to go wear a long duster coat with gloves and sing on a smoke filled stage -- once again the drama overpowers the song and the voice. He has such talent, but the drama is too much. Give this guy a musical on Broadway. Hey if Constantine can get nominated for a Tony, who knows what wonders await Adam? The judges all give him props for having a great voice and just so you know, Randy gave him an A for Adam - duh! Love that Simon finally called out the dramatics.
Anthony Hopkins is in the audience! They show the top 13 and it is amazing how despite everything, I do feel the two who should have made it to the end did. Adam was the front runner throughout - the judges pimped him, the show pimped him, he pimped himself and Kris was the underdog who slowly made his mark, built his fan base, impressed the judges - great competition.
Kris sings "Ain't No Sunshine" (I called it!) This guy is so smooth. His voice is amazing. And he is super cute too. He just sat at the piano, but his voice gave all the drama needed. Download this one asap. Simon was clapping - that is rare. Randy in his suit called him out as having one of his best performances ever. Kara says Kris moves her and creates an intimate bond (everything she says sounds dirty). Paula's earpiece says he awakens the spirit (what?) Simon admits that when Kris's name was called last week, he didn't think America had made the right choice but that after this performance he takes it all back. I do give Simon credit for admitting when he is wrong.
First round to Kris.
Adam comes out in a suit to do "A Change is Gonna Come." Love that Simon Fuller picked the songs -- the man created the show and has always given others the chance to pick songs and wield power - he knows what he is doing and these two choices were two of the best producer's choices ever. I actually liked how Adam opened and went through the verse. And then once again, the screaming phantom appeared. The sneer came out, the wide open mouth took over and it was all one long note of screaming. It didn't last for long, but when he goes there, I tune out. I just tune out. Randy said he can sing his face off ( I wish that would actually happen), Kara said it was one of his best performances / interpretations of the competition (I think she was trying to say that it is better when he doesn't scream the whole time), Paula went crazy and started yelling about the fibers of her being and Simon said he was back in the game.
Kris sings "What's Going On" Loose on the guitar in a long sleeve tee. Wouldn't it be great to hear him jam in an outdoor concert? He is a musician. It was original and cool. This guy is awesome and he didn't have to scream - he actually isn't capable of screaming. I love him. Some of the judges (Randy and Simon) choose to bring him down which is retarded. Let me say that again RETARDED! Randy thinks it is light, Kara says he is true to himself (YES KARA! You finally delivered a strong opinion and I know that you love Kris the most). Paula blabbered about Marvin Gaye being proud and Simon thought it was too laid back. The guy is laid back - that is what makes him amazing. I hope Simon takes this back tomorrow.
Simon calls the second round to Adam, I disagree.
Last song was co-written by Kara DioGuardi and I am glad that they used a song by her. I don't think it was a great song for two guys, but it was better than the Blake / Jordin song. Adam sings it like a musical theater vampire rising from the dead number. It was too high for him to stay in the range. I couldn't understand the words at one point. When he sang "You could go higher, you could go deeper" I thought he was going to fly off into the audience with a harness on. Why does he look like he about to cry? Is that how he delivers emotion? I know I am going overboard with the Adam criticism, but it is so easy to do, he is such a typical performer. Randy says the most original thing I have ever heard him say - Adam can sing the phonebook, but is was just alright (Randy, dawg, I finally agree with you). Kara thinks the screaming from the audience is cool and she is proud of the song she has written but doesn't actually say he did it well. Paula is in awe and will be a fan forever (hopefully not like her stalker fan). Simon praises him for being one of the best and most original singers the show has ever had and that Adam can be an international star.
Kris comes out and from the first note I know this is going to be hard for him, but that I would so much rather hear him sing anything over Adam. His performance gave the song a melody and some depth. His voice was tired, but I know if he sings this again tomorrow when he wins, it will be amazing. It was too high for him. I thought the judges would crush him, but they didn't. Randy thought the song was better for him than Adam, Kara urges the voters to judge him on the fact that he is a compelling artist. Paula blah blah blah blah. Simon reminds the audience of his first amazing song and praises Kris for growing in this competition and says he thoroughly, thoroughly deserves to be standing on the stage tonight. My guess? Randy, Kara and Simon all want Kris and Paula wants Adam.
They don't call the last round to anyone -- I find it hard to call the last round too.
So glad the judges weren't too partial. I think Kris is going to win this thing -- especially because I plan to vote about 50 times right now. This was a really strong not clear cut and the favorite stayed strong while the underdog slowly rose up to take over. For me, it is Kris, just in case I wasn't clear.
Looking forward to tomorrow -- who will perform? Will I cry that I am not there? Thank god I am seeing David Cook in concert on Friday that way I will be okay no matter what.
More tomorrow friends...and lots of end of TV season comments to come this weekend.
Remember, no matter what people say, don't be ashamed of your obsessions...

Will I love the finale?
Liked the promo driven opening with Night at the Museum. Love Bill Hader and Jonah Hill.
Simon's eyes bugged out when he saw Alicia Keyes come out - she looked amazing! And then she introduces a Rwandan singer. This kid was mad cool in his new clothes. This is a jump the shark moment as noted by Idol watching companion tonight. This kid's got mad moves. He could dance the phonebook. Ryan's dance moves were something else.
I really like Ryan's suit. Danny comes out - I don't understand, they are already going to tell him? Oh no, it is the hometown trip. Danny goes home to Milwaukee. Dorky girls are crying, cute girls are screaming. He sees his best friend - reunion! And then a crazy sequin top wearing girl follows him down the street. He is a nice guy. Think of where he has come from - a widower just before he got to the show.
Kris comes out and goes back to Arkansas. How cute when his Dad hugged him. So happy that we got to hear the Once song again. Isn't it crazy that his wife doesn't say anything? Do you think they did that on purpose? He is a real person. Please let him stay.
Jordin Sparks comes out. She is a giant linebacker girl. I like her hairstyle but I couldn't listen to the battle song anymore.
Adam, wow, the audience loves him. He went back to San Diego. Love that there was a streaker that ran across the stage -- did she not know he is gay? He did the anchor's makeup, wore snake skin boots. WOW. But I really liked him visiting the children's theater -- brought back memories, I did the same thing. He is a nice guy. I'm glad, otherwise I would really lose it.
The three Amigos wait for results after Katy Perry. I love this song and have for months. Love her Adam Lambert cape - that is crazy! Katy and Kara wrote a song together for Kelly Clarkson so she is rocking out. I'm glad she is focusing on singing. She is really pretty. That was fun!
I feel like I know what is going to happen, but last year I was convinced that Archuleta would beat Cook (because Ed was convinced of that) but I believed and then Cook won and so maybe I can get surprised again and Danny will go home? If I believe...
Okay, after the nationwide vote, the first finalist is KRIS. OH MY GOD! I am so excited. I can't believe it and either can he! The judges are floored. Simon can eat his words. YES! Standing O from the judges. Danny or Adam? WOW. This is insane. Adam Lambert makes it in and now the judges don't have to think they are stupid. Whew. Now the show is exciting. WOW. I am floored. My votes counted again! I believed!
Oh now some sad moments for Danny. I really liked him - he was my front runner. Danny, you can still make it if you make it happen. You have your chance now -- go for it. I will support him. He is so good at this song. Went out with a bang. The judges have to say something to him. But they don't. Simon predicts a big ding dong next week. Okay...
Now I am excited for next week! Love how American Idol can bring it back! Til next week,

The Adam Lambert show
Let me begin by saying that I would like to see Adam and Kris in the final. Adam should go to the end at this point because he has somehow, in some sort of alternate universe move, become the front runner of the season. I've said this before, and I will say it again. I have no doubt the guy can sing, but I do not find his style appealing as a live performer or a recording artist, so I am seriously confused as to why this show is promoting him so heavily. The guy scored the cover of Entertainment Weekly - solo. That shocked me beyond belief. I think the hype is not going to carry through to a successful recording career, but I guess we will see. So let's see what goes down tonight.
Danny -- "Dance Little Sister" I did like the idea of Terrence Trent Darby, but I agreed with Simon that it should have been a different Terrence Trent song. Danny got to sing in his zone, but not a memorable performance or vocal. Paula let Kara have it when she criticized his dancing "I'm a choreographer and I thought you did good." Way to tell her, Paula. Not keeping him in the competition.
Love the Glee commercials. Most anticipated show of the year for me.
Shot to Nigel Lythgoe in the audience -- the ex- executive producer who moved on after last season to focus on So You Can to Dance. Wonder what he thinks.
Kris -- "Apologize" Great song and I think he can pull something great off. Randy and Kara chose it together. It is a hard song to sing. They called him the dark horse -- WHY? I don't know anyone who still wants Danny. The propaganda is beyond. He didn't change it up, but he did a good job. He will get criticized because Kara called it open to interpretation. Randy set him up for success but alluded to him not winning the competition, Kara called it competent but that he didn't take chances. Paula called out his bum note. Go Simon for saying to Kara that her comment was a cop out. "You can't choose a song for him and then blame him for doing the song." YES! Apparently, Simon helped Adam work out the arrangement but Randy and Kara did not. What? The judges got involved with the contestants? This is so messy. He didn't blow it out, but he still sounds good.
Adam -- "One" Simon got permission personally from Bono for Adam to sing this. He opens with a dark acoustic verse in a really nice part of his voice. It was definitely theatrical, but I actually liked it. And then Adam transformed into shrieky Mary J Blige. Obviously he wants to be a woman. Randy thought he went off the melody and I agree I didn't love that. Kara called him a strategist and unbelievable. Paula loved the song choice and called him the American Idol. Simon thought it was brilliant song choice and brilliant performance. And he has to be in the finals or it will be one of the biggest upsets of the competition. I am sick of the Adam perfect love.
You know what? I changed my mind -- kick Adam off, let it be the biggest upset and let Danny and Kris duke it out. They will always say he should have won anyway.
Carrie went to Africa. Idol Gives Back helped get malaria out of their lives. Whatever, I wish Idol could help get Adam out of my life. No seriously, it's nice -- I have donated to Idol Gives Back because those shows made me cry like a baby.
Danny -- "You are so Beautiful" Good choice. Finally he sings a nice sweet soft melody. Where has this Danny been for the past 10 weeks? Then the build, into drama, I remembered the dead wife and it brought tears to my eyes. Gorgeous. Well done. Shoot, Kris is in trouble. Randy said he could really, really, really sing. Kara thought it was stunning. Paula's earpiece talked about chord structure. Simon called it a vocal masterclass. I think the judges are most happy because they can justify the Adam / Danny finale.
Kris -- "Heartless" Kanye West song. I'm nervous. Come on Kris! Beautiful voice! Him and his acoustic guitar. Modern, fresh, cool and great vocals. I can't wait for his album. I don't care what they say and he doesn't either. Randy loved it. Kara thought it was bold, brave and fearless. Perfect. Paula made a dumb joke but called him relevant which is true. Simon says he had written him out of the competition. That has now changed after that performance. I thought this was one of the best performances of the season. I am texting 5702 VOTE 1000 times. Ryan then told him it has been a great season, hope to see you again. What is wrong with the subliminal messages?
Adam -- "Crying" I like this song. He did a good job but the musical theater mix into the high notes bothers me -- why does everything have to go up that high? Randy called him one of the best they have ever had on the Idol stage, Kara says we will be seeing him in the finals, Paula acts as if she is the only judge who pushed him as a finalist from the beginning THEY ALL DID! Simon wanted to make sure that the audience does not assume he will be in the finals, and votes to put him there. Great, my loophole is gone. Adam was very humble about his competitors which was very nice. I will say that despite all the hype around him, Adam has not been a pompous jerk, and I give him credit for that. Ryan then gives another subliminal message and says to Adam. "It's gonna be a fun week next week."
So look, I don't think Adam will get kicked off. But I am hoping and texting that Kris will be there with him so we can see him again. Although the judges will probably not give an inch to Adam's competitor, so maybe it will be better for Kris to just get out and release his version of the Kanye song. It isn't worth competing. Let's see what happens folks. I hope no matter who is in the top 2, they put on a great show. And then let's hope the finale show is as fun as last year's -- can't beat the magic of David Cook, but I hope they try.
Good night friends -- oh and for those I didn't personally call or email, please go see Star Trek - it is a fabulous, clever, fun, adventure ride. And it made me unashamed to call myself a newly made Trekkie. Although, I am never ashamed of my obsessions...but even I wouldn't watch the finale of Celebrity Apprentice (ha, ha)
Danny -- "Dance Little Sister" I did like the idea of Terrence Trent Darby, but I agreed with Simon that it should have been a different Terrence Trent song. Danny got to sing in his zone, but not a memorable performance or vocal. Paula let Kara have it when she criticized his dancing "I'm a choreographer and I thought you did good." 4 to 3
This is the first time this season that I can say I don't know what is going to happen and I don't know how I will feel about the outcome. Although I had an opinion about last night (well many opinions) these 4 are all really good in their own ways and there isn't that obvious choice to kick off.
Can we talk about the opening -- did you notice that the final shot of past Idols features the ones that 19 is behind? Kelly has new management, they dropped Ruben, Fantasia isn't successful, they dropped Taylor, so the 3 featured are Jordin, David and Carrie. Interesting.
Number with Slash was cool - loud, but cool. Adam was of course singing like a girl. Next up is Paula performing and I don't even know what to say about that. Does Adam get a prize because they got the rights to the Zeppelin song? Did he have anything to do with that? So annoying when they misattributed this. I am glad that Danny admitted that he was so off. He showed great character by laughing at himself.
Here comes Paula. Wow she sold 53 million albums. I love that the judges joined forces to welcome her. There is no way she is singing live, right? She is a great dancer / performer. They never zoomed in on her face / lips. It was good. I'm okay with the lip sync. Good for her - now I want Kara to get up and sing.
No Doubt hits the stage singing Just a Girl -- that is live singing. Gwen is so cool.
Top 4 is backstage and brought out -- great clips of past Top 3 going home. Three chairs and the finalists will be announced in random order -- no bottom three or 2 scenario. Fun.
Ryan recaps Allison and Danny, then...recaps Adam, then recaps Kris. Reminder I voted mostly for Kris with a little Allison. Most people I know voted to save Kris too. First person safe is...KRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My votes count. We can make a change. He is genuinely shocked to be called out first. Yeah! The rest have to wait.
Daughtry debuts a new song which I'm sure I will download tomorrow. Reminder that Daughtry was kicked out at 4. Great episode for him to sing at. Quadruple platinum album, 3 Top 10's and is the fastest selling rock debut in soundscan history. He proves that if you are good, Idol can be a jumping off platform. New single No Surprise. They said it has a country flavor which means i will love it even more. I already love the single. Line 3. You can recognize his voice and his sound. And then the 5 million sales plaque. Well done. He is a good man.
Okay, this is it. Danny, Allison and Adam...Adam is safe. So it is down to Allison and Danny. Danny is safe and Allison is going home. She fought so hard for so long. She can take Daughtry's lesson with her. Just do your thing and you can succeed. From Walmart to Idol. She is 17 years old. I am not sad for her because she got to prove how talented she is. She does not go out on the bottom. I wish the judges got to speak.
Next week is the boy's club. Should be interesting to judge them against each other actually. They sing their own pick an a judges pick -- usually it is 3 each right? I like 2 each.
Whew. I can't believe this season is almost over. Life is flying by...
but still, I am not ashamed of my obsessions...

ROCK hard?
Wow, I am a bit speechless tonight, and you know that is hard. First there was an accident on set which meant no rehearsal -- Ryan made that sound like the end of the world. I was excited for Slash to be the mentor because then I knew Rock Week was going to stay true to that, not verge into rock-inspired songs like last week's rat pack turned rat pack inspired songs.
Adam -- "A Whole Lot of Love" I could have bet a million dollars that Adam would sing Zeppelin. But let me begin with this -- no one should wear a deep V-tee leather jacket combo with a sneer unless he is Billy Idol. That's right, Adam, I am talking to you. I could not watch him with a straight face. And I am angry because his voice is incredible but I just cannot watch him without laughing. It is so unreal! I don't understand what was original about this as was noted by Simon, so I would like someone to explain that to me. And then Simon says no one can top Adam which he repeated a TRILLION times throughout the night. Yes he deserves to stay, this week was made for him, but I just can't stand him. I want to rip the v-neck tee down and tuck it into his shoes so he bends over in half and falls down onto his hair sprayed head. Wow I have anger issues. VOTE (I won't vote for him ever, but he deserves the ranking).
Allison -- "Cry Baby" I loved her hair, so I give props to Allison for going to Adam's hair dresser. He is such a girl. But it did her well. She looked great on stage, she had some swagger (she had more later in the duet, though). I agree with Randy that another song might have had more melody, but if we are going to compare to Adam all night, let me say that at least she doesn't always sing at the top of her register - she showed range tonight and her voice is full, not tinny. I thought the judges were wrong because I thought she actually showed a lot of soul during the verses and did a lot with them. And I agreed with Allison that she should not have done Piece of My Heart or the other song because they are both overdone. I loved her fighting back!!. Kara agreed with me that she definitely does have personality when she performs (see last week's review). VOTE (a few times)
Kris and Danny duet on Renegade which is one of my favorite songs -- especially when Daughtry performed it during his season. The duet concept is new and I thought it was a nice way to give the contestants another opportunity to sing and be heard. I thought it was being set up to not be judged which is why there were no phone numbers. But Simon thought he should judge anyway and say that Danny was better - unnecessary and in bad spirit (even though I agreed). I wish Danny had picked this song to sing solo.
Kris -- "Come Together" By all means Kris is not a hard rocker and since everyone took Rock and Roll to be hard rock, he had the hardest task this week. It wasn't that bad, but my problem is that Carly did this song last season and was incredible. Did these contestants not watch last season? First time I felt Kris was seriously nervous -- I wish Adam and Allison had performed and then dueted followed by Kris and Danny soloing and then dueting -- I think Simon's criticism hurt him. I watched this again and I enjoyed it. Not the best of the night, but genuinely Kris. VOTE (multiple times which I will explain later)
Danny -- "Dream On" Once again, Michael Johns did this last season and got kicked off for it (although he did a much better job than Danny). This was terrible. From the zoot suit vest and purple shirt to the vocals to that HORRIFIC scream. Terrible choice. I don't know why the judges are pushing him anymore. I get he was trying to push it, but I'm done. No need for all the judges to see the sunshine in this situation. BUH BYE
My overall analysis -- it is time for Danny to go. I have stuck with him throughout this, but it is the end of the road. Adam, Allison and Kris have given better overall performances. Each has had more moments. Danny has used up his last chance. The producers must feel the same way since they featured the horrific scream whiel showing the number sat the end. This is why I voted many times for Kris tonight and threw some to Allison. They need to stay and fight against the dragon and be the dragon slayer (borrowing from Coach on Survivor if anyone watches that amazing season). Adam is the dragon, by the way. Adam and Allison killed the duet and it was nice to actually hear the words to this song which I have heard played about a zillion times on Guitar Hero thanks to my brother in law Rajiv -- this is the only song he plays. The grades:
Adam A
Allison B+
Kris B
Danny C
Some thoughts other than Idol. Brothers and Sisters is phenomenal. My least favorite storyline is Rebecca and Justin, then the whole Nora looking for loser Tommy, then the Ojai drama between Holly and Rachel Griffiths. The best storyline -- Kitty and Robert -- Calista Flockhart should win the Emmy this year. She is absolutely phenomenal -- we have been able to see exactly how her loss of faith in her husband and his devotion to her led to her loss of faith in being faithful. She didn't scream or cry, she just turned off as she lost her faith. Phenomenal.
And Grey's is back, no doubt. Interesting that when Izzy had a stupid storyline, the show sank and when Izzy got her storyline, it is soaring. I have always said Izzy is the heart and soul of the show -- Katherine Heigl plays the perfect balance between humor and sentimentality on this show which is the gem at the show's heart. I can't stand to see what happens to her, yet I can't turn away. Amazing.
And then there is 24. One of the best season's ever. Tony's deception, Jack's genuine pain in knowing that he trusted Tony who turned on him and the fact that this led to another possible terrorist attack -- the most conflict this character has ever felt in a way, because he was genuinely at fault. And the resurgence of CTU -- nothing better then the moment the CTU servers were turned back on and Chloe was there to watch it happen. Amazing.
More tomorrow friends...can't wait to hear Daughtry's new song and watch Paula. Remember, don't be ashamed of your obsessions...

NERVOUS NELLY, I mean Adam.
First, Simon retracts from some of his statements last night and neutralizes himself as usual by saying all of them did well and it is an open race. Think anyone filled him in on the results?
Finally a good group number that seemed to be sung live. I really enjoyed Danny and Kris in this medley because they sounded modern.
Then the cake debacle. So predictable that they gave someone the clean-up bill. I thought it was good practice for trashing hotel rooms like a real rock star.
Top 5 brought to the center of the stage. I sense tonight's drama...
Matt, Kara and Randy didn't like him, Simon and Paula liked him. He steps RIGHT
Danny, Judges all liked him. He steps LEFT
Allison, Randy Kara and Paula liked it, Simon didn't. She steps LEFT
Kris, Randy, Kara and Paula liked it, Simon didn't. He steps RIGHT
Adam, Judges all liked him. Adam has to pick a group -- I love that he acts like he didn't see it coming. Most performers won't choose, they normally sit down in the middle. But full of himself Adam does pick and goes with Danny and Allison because he thinks he is safe.
HE IS WRONG. Adam, Matt, Kris are the bottom 3 and Allison and Danny are SAFE. WOW, shocker, shocker, shocker. Paula thinks it is crazy and then talks her Mom talk about everyone being great. Ryan goes to Simon for reaction -- he congratulates the two who are safe -- why be so shocked? Randy thinks they are all talented. Kara was shocked mouth open wide that Adam was in the bottom 3 but turns it into a sex joke.
Natalie Cole who needs a new kidney and went on Larry King to ask for one sings next. I have to forward because I feel bad for her. She must not need one that badly because she is going to Korea on tour. Yikes, I am going to hell.
Danny and Allison are safe and Matt, Kris and Adam wait in the wings.
Taylor Hicks comes out and sings a terrible song. I actually like his haircut but the song is being forwarded. Yikes. He dispenses advice to the contestants and Simon had the most bored look on his face. Hysterical.
Matt, Kris and Adam -- one is safe. It is...KRIS!!! Woohoo!! Oh my I am so excited and happy. I wanted him to stay. Relief. Wow, is this going to be the shocker? If Mat had not been saved would Adam not have been in jeopardy? The Save seems to have boosted him. Wow, this is nervewracking. Daughtry made it to top 4, will Adam follow him?
Ryan introduces Kanye West -- I mean Jamie Foxx singing a Kanye West song -- I mean Jamie Foxx singing his own song that sounds exactly like a wannabe Kanye song. He basically just yelled around to his own voice on a track. He ruined his performance as a mentor.
Okay, we're back and it is Matt or Adam. It should be Matt. I know I give Adam hell, but he shouldn't leave yet. I do appreciate the dose of reality. Ryan goes to Simon and once again questions his critiques. Randy and Kara got it right on. Adam is safe. Whew, glad I said the somewhat nice thing about him before.
This was the right decision but happy that Adam got a little scared and Allison finally felt safety. Matt got his shot and a second shot too. The judges were very gracious.
Next week is Rock and Roll with Slash -- a little Sweet Child of Mine anyone??
Also, I'm not going to Idol Finale. Wanted to let everyone know now. No big reason but I have too much going on. I'm still keeping the dream alive with a live blog. I adore my fans.

This is not my Idol...
Things can't always stay the same, change is good, the times they are a changing...I'm going to admit that this season of Idol is just not as exciting as last season. Then again, the Blake / Jordan season was only good when Blake performed Bon Jovi, and thank god we had Daughtry to come out of the Katherine / Taylor year. I have not given up that these contestants can wow me, and I won't stop watching, but I just wanted to let you know that I am disappointed. I don't blame the producers or judges, it is the contestants -- they are just not as exciting and haven't had many awe-inspiring moments. But there is still time -- come on Top 5 -- WOW ME!
So the Top 5 is Adam, Kris, Allison, Danny and Matt. I am hoping Kris can keep it strong and fun and that Danny can pull something out of his back pocket, he needs to. Tonight's theme is songs from the Rat Pack - which could be fun. The mentor was a surprise -- JAMIE FOXX! That is kind of cool, but I don't believe it was a coincidence that Matt was playing Georgia on My Mind when Jamie walked in. Was Ray Charles part of the Rat Pack? No, but I guess somehow Jamie is. Okay, I'll let that go.
Kris -- "The Way You Look Tonight" I'm a little scared by how slow it is during his rehearsal. Jamie loves him and wants to do an album with him. Awesome. But he is first which always scares me. He looks slick - I like a grey suit. He starts it straight and then changes some phrasing. And then he ups the tempo. It sounds a bit all over the place but he is smooth. Fabulous end note. Eat that falsetto Matt. Randy loves his dawg, Kara used technical and impeccable, Paula's earpiece copied Kara and used impeccable. Simon thought it was wet not dry, safe and he doesn't think Kris can win. I kind of agree I wasn't blown away, but this man better stay in to save the season. VOTE
Allison -- "Somebody to Watch Over Me" She should not have talked about her birthday SUHRPRIIIZE because it was a turn off. I like the song choice. Her voice quality makes everything sound her own and unique. She looked pretty tonight. Does she come up with all of her own phrasing? It is so natural. That run gave me chills. LOVED it. So polished. Wow, Kara has a lot to say. Paula's earpiece knows a lot of words. Simon still doesn't think she believes she can win. I heard him say this week that he sees Adam and Danny in the finals. He is just trying to be right. Remember when he said Gaspy wiped the floor with David Cook at the finale and then took it back when he realized he was wrong? Whatever. I think she has the confidence when she sings, just not when speaking...VOTE
They went back to the old school order of judging - left to right. Not sure I like Simon always going last anymore.
Can we talk about Kara's hair do? I don't like it. It doesn't show artistry.
Matt -- "My Funny Valentine" Jamie gave him advice on how to earn a standing ovation. Hat boy is annoying. I don't think he can redeem himself. Lots of pitchy notes. He was doing his best Jamie Foxx impression though and I am glad that he didn't go falsetto and took Jamie's advice to sing in full voice (otherwise known as chest voice for real singers, not ghetto fab actor turned rapper singers). Randy said no dawg, Kara said no dawg, Paula loved it, Simon said no dawg to the dawg and thought it was authentic. He thought Matt was brilliant. I don't know what universe I am in. BUH BYE
Danny -- "Come Rain or Come Shine" Finally, Danny did something that I thought he could do -- not shout everything, build, find some originality, and just SING! I thought it was one of his best -- not blown away, I thought Allison was better, but the suit was cool, his performance was cool, and he could sing. Agree with Randy that voice is what the judging should be based on - too bad they don't always actually judge based on that. I think Kara and Paula and Simon went a bit overboard, but glad to see Danny back in action. VOTE
Adam -- "Feeling Good" The pimp spot AGAIN? The white suit is killing me. KILLING ME. And the drawing out of the words like SHIIIIIIINE. This is a rat pack song? The Freddie Mercury act is too much. They will say he was original, but he sounds like Freddie Mercury. I want him to not win and let him put out an album and see how it does. It will fail. I hate him. Can you tell? Kara said he was sleazy - I agree, but unlike Miss Artistry, I don't like sleazy. WHATEVER
I am only voting for Kris and Allison and throwing Danny one or two. Here are my ratings.
Kris B+
Allison A
Matt B
Danny A-
Adam I HATE HIM
Matt needs to go home. PLEASE VOTE FOR ALLISON AND KRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest bloggers help me out
So I am in LA and had an event tonight and had no DVR to help me, so I have enlisted two guest bloggers -- Jen who I went to college with and who I recently discovered was an Idol fan and Mark, my one time singing partner and fellow Idol adorer. Jen is in straight font and Mark is in italics. This is hysterical - amazing job to both!
Hi! This is Jennifer Niederhoffer, a friend of Rachna’s from NYU, and I’m here to dish on tonight’s results. We’re getting ready for a double elimination after over 45 million votes. [First is group opening number] I hope there’s a costume change because I can’t look at these hideous, poorly interpreted 1970s-esque outfits for a full 60 minutes. It’s interesting how the judges are always so harsh on the contestants when they turn in a hotel lounge worthy performance, but these group numbers make me feel like I’m on a Carnival cruise ship! Where’s Kathie Lee Gifford when you need her?
Group dance number to Michael Jackson's Shake Your Body Down To The Ground choreographed by Paula. Hideous. Paula wearing Fabrice dress from 1986.
Now to the results: Lil is up first? I’m kind of surprised about that. Let’s see… Ryan asks her to walk to the far side of the stage and… Oh, SNAP! Lil is just OUT! No bottom three tonight. See ya. BUH-BYE! Obviously, this is no big shocker. Lil was so promising at the auditions, but had nothing to offer artistically after that. Her performance of “I’m Every Woman” is much stronger tonight, and so she goes out on a high note and gets a standing O from all the judges. Another plus for Lil is that clearly she had a good stylist tonight. She’s wearing a cute and shape-flattering outfit—a complete 180 from last night’s ass-inflating cat suit.
Lil went home. Biggest disappointment contestant in 8 seasons.
And now for the disco medley… Well, I used to love the song “Band of Gold,” but from now on I may have nightmares about this performance. Original disco stars sang!! Freda Payne looking very old singing Band of Gold. She must be 70. I sat next to her at theatre in San Francisco when I was about 9 years old and she stood up and took bow in spotlight. Cannot sing anymore. SAD.
“Don’t Leave Me This Way” is my all-time disco fave. I hope I can be as spunky as Thelma Houston when I reach her age (62). Thelma Houston!!!! Don't Leave Me This Way!!! Still pretty good. Sam and Dudley and I are dancing around living room. She is wearing dressy yellow neglige. She's singing about Simon. (Insert from Rachna, Sam and Dudley are Mark's adorable beagles so I'm sure the dancing around the living room is HYSTERICAL)
Isn’t KC from KC and the Sunshine Band a freakin’ bazillionaire by now? He should just retire and count his money on an island somewhere because he clearly cannot sing anymore. Even his backup dancers/singers looked bored. KC Get Down Tonight! Scary. He should not be doing this anymore. Perverse. Looks like child molester.
Back to the results of the dramatic double elimination. (Their words, not mine.) Oh wait… There IS a bottom three? I’m confused. Anyway, Kris is up and, after some more references to Paula’s “shops in the ladies department” comments from last night, Kris is safe. (No surprise, he was the best of the night.) Now to Adam and the audience is going NUTS. Blah blah blah, we all know he’s safe and probably going to win anyway. Adam has LONG black hair growing out of his ears.
Danny Gokey: too much stubble and not wearing his trademark eyeglasses tonight, so he just looks like a Color Me Badd reject. Hokey Gokey is dressed up as Taylor Hicks.
On to Anoop. That was *so* not his worst performance… Simon must’ve forgotten about Michael Jackson week. Anoop’s in the bottom three to be joined by Allison or Matt. Anoop has colored clothes problems. Sorry Rachna. I know he's your peeps....
Bottom three now or one of remaining bottom two as Lil gone. And Matt safe and Alison also in bottom. Ridiculous. Makes me MAD! (Rachna interjects -- Allison had a moment last night - she should NOT have been in the bottom 3 -- Matt should have!!!)
So, Matt… is safe! That’s a surprise to me. I definitely thought Lil, Matt, and Anoop would be the bottom three. I guess the Michael Buble/Justin Timberlake fans are voting en masse.
David Archuleta is on… awful song, awful album cover. I’m not a fan. Glad that’s over. Archuleta now singing Ed's song...Touch My Hand. Sorry but he puts this years contestants all to shame. He's STAR and adorable. I think Kris should win and he and Archie should do duet. (Rachna interjects -- I will save my opinion til I watch, but I do agree with Mark that Gaspy actually was a lot better than some of the finalists this year, but agree with Jen that I am not a fan either...)
OK, so now we’re down to Anoop and Allison. Ryan says “Good luck to both of you. And, the second person going home tonight is… Anoop Desai.” Boo! Rachna is going to be pissed. I’m sad to say goodbye to Anoop, but not to his bad facial hair.
Anoop going home. Alison safe thank god. The Slumdog WAVE has CRASHED. Back to the frat house. Pack up your colored sweaters and bye bye. He is going to join Jasmine Trias on her Philippines endless tour and then she is going to join him for the Amazing Anoop and Jasmine India tour. Maybe he should have tried Dim All The Lights with Bollywood flavor???
Rachna interjects -- look, I never thought Anoop was going to win it, but he was not that bad (except during Michael Jackson week) Really, no one liked his cover of Always on My Mind? Or True Colors? And come on, but didn't we all start singing My Perogative again? It wasn't because he was Indian, it was because he was a normal guy -- not a theater mess, not a teen idol sensation, not someone who always wanted to be a superstar, not some kid from poverty who would now make it big. For me, he was a first generation American who grew up with normal parents who lived a normal life and tried out for a long shot dream. And you know what, at least 25 million people now know and can pronounce the name Anoop Desai and most of them probably think he is a cool dude who can sing. To me, that is part of the American Dream and the dream of American Idol.
And on that note (and with a shout out to new blog reader "McNally") goodnight and thank you again to Jen and Mark -- you helped keep the dream alive!
remember, don't be ashamed of your obsessions...
