Okay, I know you knew this was coming...you must watch the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Wednesday night 10PM ET on CBS. I don't want to hear any excuses like -- "Oh I fell asleep, you know how lame I am!" or "My DVR didn't record it!" or "I hate watching those girls, they make me feel fat!" I don't want to hear it. It is fun and entertaining and if you see fit to open this blog ever again, then just watch it -- I ask you for 1 hour of your time.
Secondly, the family and I headed to our annual post-Thanksgiving holiday movie and since we are mostly Indian (sorry Dave and half sorry to Jay and Jess) and given the terrible terrorist news about Mumbai this past weekend, it seemed fitting to see a film that was filmed in India. Slumdog Millionaire is an amazingly well-made film about a young Indian man who grew up in poverty in the slums of India and lands a chance appearance as a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. In order to make its point that this man's life (and those of all of us?) is destined as opposed to a game of chance, the movie explains how this man of little means manages to answer the questions of the game show correctly because the path of his life has led him to each answer. The film really brought the sights and sounds of the Indian city to life and the often despondent characteristics of lives of poverty. Little known actors make up the cast so that the viewer can just focus on this story and this film without thinking about the actors playing the roles.
It is a fantastic film - pretty depressing, but it certainly would make all of us (meaning those who have time to write or read a blog) thankful for what we have. So to that end, it was a great Thanksgiving choice for the Shah / Friedel / Kinkhabwala family.
And let me tell you about a wonderful thing I got to experience last night -- Kate Winslet and her husband, Sam Mendes (he is a theater director and also an Oscar-winning film director of America Beauty) spoke at a Times Talks which are held by the NY Times. They each spoke about their careers and most importantly about their work together on the new film Revolutionary Road. As you have already read on this blog and probably heard come out of my mouth -- I genuinely cannot wait to see this film. I had the chance to see more clips from it at the Talk and I almost jumped out of my seat. And with every answer about her film choices, her family, her acting, etc. I was even more convinced that Kate is the most talented actress of my generation and I wouldl ike to be her friend, or acquaintance, or best friend. (Wow, I do have stalker tendencies!) If anyone wants to argue that she isn't the best actress of my generation, go for it, but guaranteed, I will win that conversation.
Well I am going to sign off now, but will certainly have more to say next week (as I always do :))
Just remember, don't be ashamed of your obsessions...
