I am really not ready for the Golden Globes -- I still have movies left to see and I truly do not appreciate this pressure. But don't you worry, I will still give you my predictions. I like to do a what I want to win versus what will win because god knows those voters in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are not always listening to me (though they should).
My analysis of the show will come to you Monday with more fuel to support my choices below.
Best Motion Picture, Drama
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network Should Win, Will Win
This was a good year - loved every single one of these films. Black Swan thrilled me, The Fighter moved me, Inception took me for the best ride, The King's Speech inspired me and Social Network captured my attention. Hard to say should win here because I really was blown away by Inception, but the perfect zeitgeist capturing moment of The Social Network makes it historical. One note - for me? The Town should have been nominated over The King's Speech. King's Speech was an amazing performance, but the Town was an amazing movie.
Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right Better damn win, Should absolutely win in this category
Red
The Tourist
This category makes no sense - these are funny? Were there no real comedies this year? I mean, yes I laughed during The Kids Are All Right, but it is not a comedy. Oh and don't even get me started about the comedy and musical combo category.
Best Director - Motion Picture
Darren Aronofsky - Black Swan
David Fincher - The Social Network Will Win
Tom Hooper - The King's Speech
Christopher Nolan - Inception Should Win
David O. Russell - The Fighter
Hard category again, but I doubt they won't give director to Fincher because of the movie's pace. Aronofsky could pull it off too. I'm not feeling the momentum for Nolan, but in my book, he was the best director of the year.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network
Colin Firth - The King's Speech Will Win, Should Win
James Franco - 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg - The Fighter
Great category. Honestly each of them gave an amazing performance but I have to give Colin Firth this one because in the case of the other films I saw, someone else was slightly responsible for the performance of the main actor (Eisenberg had Sorkin's words, Gosling had the light and then dark of Michelle Williams and Wahlberg had Bale). Firth's creation stood on its own in my mind. I could see it go to Eisenberg too though from the int'l press perspective.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
Halle Berry - Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman - Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence - Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman - Black Swan Will Win, Should Win
Michelle Williams - Blue Valentine
Didn't see Frankie and Alice so no comment on that nomination. Loved Kidman in Rabbit Hole - she finally gave us another performance to remind us how incredible she can be. Winter's Bone was boring and I don't get why it was anything to talk about. Michelle Williams was heartbreaking. But Kidman and Williams didn't get to emotionally AND physically transform the way Natalie did and her performance stays stuck in my head. It was mesmerizing.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy
Johnny Depp - Alice in Wonderland Will Win, Have no idea if he or anyone else should
Johnny Depp - The Tourist
Paul Giamatti - Barney's Version
Jake Gyllenhaal - Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey - Casino Jack
This is the most retarded list of performances. I am sure it will go to Johnny Depp because the HFPA is obsessed with him. But I would give it to Jake because I think it is funny he dated Taylor Swift. (Kidding) I don't care who wins this.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy
Anne Hathaway - Love and Other Drugs
Julianne Moore - The Kids Are All Right Should Win
Annette Bening - The Kids Are All Right Will Win
Emma Stone - Easy A
Angelina Jolie - The Tourist
Angelina? Seriously? Oh yeah, this is a comedy category. I am still tortured by whether this category is for being a comedian or acting (even in a serious mode) in a comedy. Bening will win because she acts naturally in every role she is in and she is actually the contender against Portman when movies are not separated by comedy and drama. However, I thought Julianne Moore was amazing in this film - hysterically funny, sweet, and heartbreaking at the same time. Go Frannie!
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Christian Bale - The Fighter Will Win, Should Win
Michael Douglas - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Jeremy Renner - The Town
Geoffrey Rush - The King's Speech
Hands down, no question. Bale has this in the bag.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Amy Adams - The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter - The King's Speech
Mila Kunis - Black Swan
Melissa Leo - The Fighter Will Win, Should Win
Jacki Weaver - Animal Kingdom
What is Animal Kingdom? I adore Amy Adams in everything but supporting awards usually go to a more character actor and I can still hear Leo's voice and accent in my head.
Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
127 Hours
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
The Social Network Will Win, Should Win
Inception
The best written script of modern day language.
Best Animated Feature Film
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Toy Story 3 Will Win, I did not see any of these
Tangled
Best Foreign Language Film
Biutiful
The Concert
The Edge
I Am Love Will Win, I did not see any of these
In a Better World
Best Original Song - Motion Picture
Bound to You - Burlesque
Coming Home - Country Strong Please god don't let Gwyneth win something else
I See the Light - Tangled
There's a Place for Us - Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Let Carrie Win!
You Haven't Seen the Last of Me - Burlesque
Best Original Score - Motion Picture
Alexandre Desplot - The King's Speech
Danny Elfman - Alice in Wonderland
A.R. Rahmin - 127 Hours Umm, let's give it to one of my people
Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross - The Social Network
Hans Zimmer - Inception
Best Television Series, Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men Will Win, Should WIn and the only one of these I watch
The Walking Dead
Where is Friday Night Lights?
Best Televison Series, Comedy or Musical
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family Will Win, Should Win
Nurse Jackie
Love 30 Rock and Glee, but Modern Family is comic genius right now
Best Actor in a Television Series, Drama
Steve Buscemi - Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad Will WIn because he always does
Michael C. Hall - Dexter
Jon Hamm - Mad Men Should Win because I love him and this character
Hugh Laurie - House
Where is Kyle Chandler?
Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama
Julianna Margulies - The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss - Mad Men
Piper Perabo - Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal - Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick - The Closer
Piper Perabo is WHAT? Never heard of this show. Where is Connie Britton? I am boycotting this category.
Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock Will Win
Steve Carell - The Office Should WIn
Thomas Jane - Hung
Matthew Morrison - Glee
Jim Parsons - Big Bang Theory
I'm sorry, I know Alec Baldwin is fantastic, but I gotta give some love to Steve Carrell - I look at him and crack up.
Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television
Hope Davis - Special Relationship
Jane Lynch - Glee Will Win, Should Win
Kelly McDonald - Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles - Dexter
Sofia Vergara - Modern Family
Poor supporting TV actors - they all get lumped together, drama, comedy and miniseries / movies. I think Lynch will win it and should, but Vergara is coming on strong this season and almost has as many stunning one-liners as Lynch now.
Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television
Scott Caan - Hawaii Five-0
Chris Noth - The Good Wife
David Straithairn - Temple Grandin
Eric Stonestreet - Modern Family
Chris Colfer - Glee Will WIn, SHould WIn
I gotta go for Kurt - his performances have brought me to tears.
Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical
Toni Collette - United States of Tara
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie WIll Win because I did someting wrong in a past life
Tina Fey - 30 Rock Should Win, I guess
Laura Linney - The Big C
Lea Michelle - Glee
Uggh I hate Toni and Edie. Just give to to Tina.
Note - I have eliminated the movie / miniseries for TV categories because I think they should be eliminated. Irrelevant.
Here's to some good fashion on Sunday! Remember, don't be ashamed of your obsessions, unless you are obsessed with Piper Perabo in Covert Affairs - then you should be ashamed.
